RELEASE: IMMEDIATE December 6, 2018 CONTACT: Paula K. Jones 434-856-8176 (office) LYN-18-122 CONTRACT AWARDED for REPLACEMENT OF MAIN STREET BRIDGE on ALTAVISTA/HURT LINE LYNCHBURG —A $16.8 million contract was awarded to English Construction Company, Inc. of Lynchburg, to replace the bridge that carries Main Street (Route 29 Business) traffic over the Staunton River and Norfolk Southern Railroad between the towns of Altavista, Campbell County and Hurt, Pittsylvania County. The existing structure was built in 1929 and served these communities with two-way traffic and a walking path for many years. However, the path was closed several years ago because of the condition of the structure. The new two-lane structure will be built on the same site and will include bicycle and pedestrian accommodations. The existing bridge will be closed during construction and traffic will be detoured around the site. Construction will be complete by May 2021.

Auto-Pay / EFT utility payments only

Auto-Pay/EFT is the option that we recommend. It allows us to debit your payment from a checking or saving account. And it’s FREE. With Auto-Pay, your payment will be drafted five (5) days after the bill date that is printed on your monthly/quarterly bill. If the date falls on a weekend or holiday, the payment will be drafted the following business day. You can call our office and update your banking information or discontinue Auto-Pay at any time. If you would like to sign up for Auto-Pay, complete the auto-payment application form (see the link below) and return it to our office along with a voided check from your bank account. If you do not have checks for your account, a deposit slip with your routing number and account number will work.

      Town History

Compared to other towns in the Old Dominion, Altavista is relatively young. The idea for the creation of a town in this location came in 1905 when three Lane brothers, contractors for the building of 32 miles of the Virginian Railway in this part of Virginia, bought 2,000 acres of land in Campbell County.

    Water Billing or Leaks

    Water Billing or Leaks

If you have questions about your water bill, call the Finance Department. The most common cause for unusually high water bills are running toilets or waterline leaks between the meter and the residence. Leaks on the yard-side of the meter are the responsibility of the water customer. Leaks on the street-side of the water meter do not affect the reading on your meter because the water does not flow through the mechanism. Repair of leaks on the street-side of the meter is the responsibility of the Town. Please report any waterline breaks or suspected leaks on the public side of the meter to Public Works Office.
