Changes in Utility Rates - December 2020

Altavista, Va. – Water and sewer rates will be increasing, 8% and 4% respectively effective December 1, 2020.
Town Council remains focused on securing funding for the approximately $40 million of needed improvements for water and wastewater facilities, treatment, distribution, and water collection services over the next 25 years. This increase represents the third increase of a five-year plan. The first increase took effect December 1, 2018.
Though these changes are effective December 1, 2020, customers will not see changes on their utility bills until the January 2021 bill for monthly customers or the April 2021 bill for quarterly customers. A customer’s bill with water and sewer service using 5,000 gallons at the current rate calculates to $46.31. With the new rates, the bill will be $47.91, a difference of $1.60. Below is a listing of the new utility rates that are effective December 1st.
WATER RATES PER 1,000 GALLONS
- Business & Residential - $2.75
- Industrial - $2.69
- Town of Hurt - $4.13
- Business & Residential Outside of Town - $5.49
- Industrial Outside of Town - $5.38
SEWER RATES PER 1,000 GALLONS (BASED ON 85% OF WATER CONSUMPTION OR METERED CONSUMPTION)
- Business & Residential - $3.45
- Industrial - $3.54
- Town of Hurt - $3.45
- Business & Residential Outside of Town - $6.90
- Industrial Outside of Town - $7.08
